I apologise for the poor quality of this picture. This shows a typical 50's "dustcart" with the crew manhandling dustbins full of rubbish, which had to be lifted and emptied into the lorry. In today's Health & Safety conscious society such practices would not be tolerated and the type of vehicle depicted here has been replaced by the refuse collector with hydraulic compactor, loaded from "wheelie bins" which are lifted and emptied automatically, relieving the crews of much of the back breaking work endured by their forefathers.
